A Bite of History: Unicorn Restorations, the 1974 Camaro Z28 by Mike Thies

A Bite of History: Unicorn Restorations, the 1974 Camaro Z28

At any good car show, you will find 1957 Chevys in every form: survivors, frame-off restorations, and restomods. What you will rarely find is a 1958. That tells you something about the collector market. Not every year of a popular model becomes a true collectible. Buyers pick favorites, and those years get saved, restored, and passed down, while the years next to them are often forgotten. The 1958 Chevy is a good example of this. It was a one-year body style that never gained the following of the 1955 to 1957 cars.

The second-generation Camaro follows the same pattern. The 1970 to 1973 split-bumper Rally Sport cars are the stars of that generation, and they are the cars most collectors want. By 1974, federal bumper rules brought large aluminum bumpers and a new front end, and the Z28 was dropped after that year and did not return until 1977. Because of this, the 1974 cars have mostly been passed over. Most were driven hard, modified, or left to rust, so finding a clean, original example is not easy.

That is what makes this 1974 Z28 so unusual. The car keeps its original red paint, the black Z28 hood graphics and rear spoiler, and a red interior, with about 34,000 original miles and a documented three-owner history. The first owner kept the car until her passing in 1993, and it then sat in storage. When we looked for comparable cars, we could not find another high-quality restomod 1974 Z28, let alone one that still had its original paint, stripes, and interior. This might just be a true unicorn.

What sets it apart is what is underneath. The car now runs a 495-horsepower LS3 crate engine, a Tremec 5-speed manual, RideTech suspension, Wilwood brakes, and Vintage Air air conditioning. From the curb, it looks like a period-correct 1974 Z28. From behind the wheel, it drives like a new car. This makes 1974 a newly collectible year!

Note: this ‘Unicorn” is on its way to its new home in Texas!  Sold by “Collectible Motor Car” in Marietta!

The Insurance Total-Loss Process

By Mike Thies

A total-loss declaration is a math problem first and a negotiation second. If you understand how the insurer reaches its number, you can tell whether that number is fair, and what to do if it is not.

This guide is general information, not an appraisal of any specific vehicle. For a valuation you can rely on, request an…
