Most of the time fear is a "what-if-worst-case" scenario that we play over and over in our minds. My cousin as a young girl had a debilitating fear that monsters would get her if she slept in the dark. To this day, as a grown woman she still sleeps with the lights on while her husband sleeps in the guest bedroom. While most of us would look at this situation and possibly even laugh at how illogical her fear is, to her... it is very real.
A few years ago, as we started to enter our country's economic slump I found myself watching the evening news; FOX, CNN, MSNBC... all of them. Over time I started to notice some changes in myself. I had transitioned from an eternal optimist into a pessimist. I was letting war, politics, racism, sexism, and the rest of the mind-filth penetrate my psyche. Rather than "sleep with the light on" I decided to establish a new rule in our house... no news... no radio, tv, newspaper or iPhone updates. The new policy worked... despite the fact that there are real concerns out there, I found that my family and I are once again "glass-half-full."
As I walk around car shows nowadays I hear more and more negativity. Try to be a positive influence in your community and take our grandmother's advice... "never talk religion or politics." Let's do the best we can to get back to talking about engines, interiors and paint jobs... much more fun.

Subject: RE: Fear and Risk
HFMH Michael,
An acronym of fear that works for me is "false evidence appearing real." Keeping in mind the key word is false. A tool I use to overcome that is gratitude. I recommend that one makes a 3 week committment to maintain a daily, live gratitude journal. That's right, part of the committment is to keep the journal withyou throughout the day, and make a minimum of 10 entries per day. Each entry begins with the words "I am grateful for......." At the end of three weeks you will have created an attitude of gratitude. And fear and gratitude can not coexist in the same consciousness.
Hope this helps,
G
Love it Gary... Don't curse the darkness, light a candle.

A Bite of History - Marcos
By Mike Thies
The Marcos was one of those wonderfully unconventional British sports car companies that could only have come from the postwar racing world. The company was founded in 1959 by Jem Marsh and aerodynamicist Frank Costin, with the name Marcos coming from Marsh and Costin. Costin brought serious aircraft and racing design experience to the project, and that influence showed up immediately in the cars: low frontal area, light weight,…

A Judge’s View from Pinehurst: Sandhills Motoring Expo 2026 by Mike Thies
The 2026 Sandhills Motoring Expo Concours in the Village was one of those days that reminds you why we do this. Held Sunday, May 24, in the historic Village of Pinehurst, the event brought together more than 130 judged automobiles representing over 40 manufacturers, and from this judge’s point of view, it was a first-class field, a well-run operation, and a genuinely enjoyable day with owners who were proud to…
