A Bite of History - 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback by Mike Thies

A Bite of History - 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

Ford already had a runaway hit when the Mustang debuted at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964. Initially offered as a hardtop and convertible, it combined sporty styling with a price everyday buyers could afford. Then came the Fastback in September 1964, bringing a sweeping roofline that gave the little Mustang a whole new attitude.

Officially called the “2+2,” the Fastback offered seating for four, with a folding rear seat that opened up space for luggage and longer items. Those distinctive louvers behind the side windows served a purpose, providing ventilation for the passenger compartment. It was a practical car dressed for a much more exciting life.

One detail often gets overlooked: there was no factory “1964½” Mustang Fastback. The Fastback arrived with the regular 1965 lineup, after the early hardtops and convertibles that enthusiasts gave that nickname. More than sixty years later, its appeal is easy to understand. The long hood, short rear deck and flowing roofline still look right. Some designs simply don’t need explaining.
