Event Description

BIRMINGHAM CAR CLUBS WELCOME SENNA IN STYLE

at Sunday’s Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival

Birmingham, Alabama (August 27, 2011) In celebration of the screening of the documentary, Senna, during the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, several local car clubs have joined forces to coordinate an impressive Senna-themed car show in front of the Alabama Theatre at 3:00 on Sunday, August 28, 2011 (film show time is 3:40). Two very special Senna-related vehicles from the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum will take center stage in front of the theater, flanked by cars belonging to local collectors and enthusiasts.

Winner of the 2011 World Cinema Documentary Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, Senna is the story of legendary Brazilian three-time F1 World Championship race car driver, Ayrton Senna. Its single Birmingham screening is part of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. While Senna is opening to rave reviews at a handful of theaters around the country this weekend, Sunday’s 3:40 show at the Alabama Theatre will be the only opportunity Birmingham moviegoers have to see the film on the big screen.  “Far more than a film for F1 fans, SENNA unfolds a remarkable story in a remarkable manner, eschewing many standard documentary techniques in favor of a more cinematic approach that makes full use of astounding footage, much of which is drawn from F1 archives and previously unseen” (www.sennamovie.com).

Members of several of Birmingham’s exotic and sports car clubs were making plans to travel to the nearest cities where the film opens this weekend –  Atlanta, Memphis, and Nashville – when they learned that Senna  would be featured during the Sidewalk Festival on Sunday afternoon. With the cooperation of the Festival and the Alabama Theatre, the local car clubs will temporarily take over the stretch of 3rd Avenue North that runs in front of the theatre, and even a patch of sidewalk, with a display of cars (and a motorcycle) that reflect a Senna theme. From the car clubs, look for a Ferrari 355, a Lotus Esprit, a Mercedes Benz AMG SLS, a Ford GT, and an Acura NSX. And courtesy of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, look for the Lotus 95T F1 car (twin to a car Senna raced), and a MV Agusta F4 “Senna” motorcycle. Depending on street closures at the time of arrival, an additional two dozen of Birmingham’s finest exotic and sports cars may cruise by the front of the theater around 3:00.

The clubs who joined together to coordinate the pre-Senna events are the Alabama Region Porsche Club of America; Alabama Region Sports Car Club of America; Birmingham British Motoring Club, Ferrari Club of America; Lotus Ltd. Alabama Lotus Car Club; Mercedes-Benz Club America Alabama Section, and MOB, Inc.

1958 Porsche 356 Speedster

The 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster marks the swan song of one of Porsche’s most iconic and minimalist models. Originally introduced in 1954 at the urging of U.S. importer Max Hoffman, the Speedster was designed to be a low cost, lightweight, stripped-down entry sports car that could double as a weekend racer, especially for the California sports car scene. With its low windshield,…

1948 Rover P3 Saloon

The 1948 Rover P3 Saloon marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of British motoring. Introduced in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the P3 was a bridge between prewar craftsmanship and the modern engineering ethos that would come to define Rover’s future. Although its styling retained many traditional elements, including an upright grille, separate fenders, and rear-hinged front…

The Volunteer Gap: Thoughts on Why Car Clubs Are Struggling to Fill Leadership Roles, and What to Do About It

With car shows, cruise-ins, tours, parades and varied events across the country, car clubs continue to bring enthusiasts together for camaraderie, preservation, and celebration of automotive history. But behind the scenes, many of these clubs are hitting a serious speed bump: no one wants to take the wheel. Volunteer-run clubs are facing an increasingly common…

Why It’s Hard to Recruit Younger Members to Volunteer Car Clubs, and How to Fix It

Car clubs have long been the social engine of the collector car world, bringing people together to swap parts, plan road trips, attend shows, and preserve automotive history. But in recent years, many volunteer-run car clubs have struggled with a pressing problem: recruiting and retaining younger members. The concern isn’t just about numbers, it’s about sustainability. As the…
