You and your friends should email or write your Georgia legislators NOW to help shoot down the SALES TAX ON PRIVATE CAR SALES. You can find yours at www.legis.ga.gov/legis/FindLegislator.htm. The following may give you an idea of what to argue.

Dear Senator

THERE IS NO TRADE IN to reduce Sales tax on private car sales. Dealers calculate tax on the difference price. That means that you put an UNFAIR burden of tax on private buyers. The private sellers price would also be reduced. It is a boon to the rich dealers and puts an unfair burden on poor folks that cant afford dealer prices and also don't have good enough credit to deal with dealers. The unqualified poor person that can only come up with $1000 to buy a car, to be able to drive to work, now gets an extra 6 to maybe 8% tax.  The dealers only charge a small portion of that because of trade ins. The dealers must be lobbing for this. If the tax goes in there should be some provision for crediting some amount for a theoretic trade. There should also be NO TAX FOR ANTIQUE CARS.
