Early today, November 17, 2014, a true leader of the antiques car industry and hobby has died. Harold Coker started his tire business and his collection of forms and molds are the reason so many antique and collector cars even have tires on which to run! He began his career as a territory manager with the old B.F.Goodrich Tire Co. before starting his own business, Coker Tire Co., in 1958, leading the company to become the largest supplier of collector car tires and wheels in the world.…

HERITAGE
By Drew Hardin

At the 1973 Street Rod Nationals (or so the story goes), rod builders Andy Brizio and Lil’ John Buttera got into a, shall we say, friendly discussion about which end of the Golden State produced the best street rods. Southern Californian Buttera ribbed Brizio, who was from South San Francisco, about how the Bay Area…

HENRY’S “T” & EDSEL’S “A” CLICK ON THE PICTURES!
A major number of polls and surveys have agreed the Ford Model T was clearly the world's most influential car of the 20th Century. Henry Ford has often been credited as the pioneer but actually the real pioneers were in Europe and the “automobile” had existed for decades. It was true, though, that their public adoption had been limited, and they were mostly scarce and expensive. What Henry really did is put…

About a year ago my wife made a bet with me that I couldn't build a Boatcar, but I proved her wrong. I purchased a GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 V6 and stripped the entire body except for the chassis, the seats and the motor. I then found a 18.5 ft Sea Ray bow rider that was ready for the landfill. She was stripped of her motor, out drive, and her interior including the floor. I then brought them together as one. She is now street legal because she has head lights, tail lights, turn signals,…

A Bite of History - Marcos
By Mike Thies
The Marcos was one of those wonderfully unconventional British sports car companies that could only have come from the postwar racing world. The company was founded in 1959 by Jem Marsh and aerodynamicist Frank Costin, with the name Marcos coming from Marsh and Costin. Costin brought serious aircraft and racing design experience to the project, and that influence showed up immediately in the cars: low frontal area, light weight,…

A Judge’s View from Pinehurst: Sandhills Motoring Expo 2026 by Mike Thies
The 2026 Sandhills Motoring Expo Concours in the Village was one of those days that reminds you why we do this. Held Sunday, May 24, in the historic Village of Pinehurst, the event brought together more than 130 judged automobiles representing over 40 manufacturers, and from this judge’s point of view, it was a first-class field, a well-run operation, and a genuinely enjoyable day with owners who were proud to…
